On this page, we’ll post notes, details, and other random (but hopefully useful) information about the internet, technical details, or even some commonly asked questions that we may get from our customers and friends.
Basically, this page holds a bunch of information that doesn’t really belong anywhere else. Therefore, you may consider this page our Junk Drawer of the internet.
DSL or Cable?
By Jeff Shepherd
October 10, 2009
Lately, the topic of internet speed has come up and what’s better, DSL or cable? While I won’t go into details about which is better, I will only offer one thing: I’ve worked in technical support for (notice company name not given?), which provides DSL for most of the Southern United States; much of Texas, California, and the North East. I recently heard that they’ve expanded to offer support for much of the Qwest (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, the Northwest US and North-Midwest US) network as well. To get to the point however, after working on “the inside” for the time that I did, I will never use DSL if there’s another option.
With that said, I would like to point you, my readers, to two very useful sites. It’s a third party Internet Speed Test site that you and your friends can tout to one another as to who has the faster connection. Never mind what the corporate world that tells you which is faster, let a third party help you determine who has the faster connection between you and your friends. I give you, SpeedTest.net and PingTest.net. Here are my results from each:
Not bad, really. Especially since the SpeedTest.net results show that my connection is over 33Mbps! I’m only supposed to be getting about 15Mbps (standard Cox Communications cable internet package) based on the package that I’m on, but I’m certainly not complaining.
So there you have it, a internet speed test that can evaluate your internet connection and a service that also check the quality of your line. So after you and your buddies each test your speeds, who’s faster?
Update – January 22, 2010:
We now offer a speed test meter that you can use right from the Hummdis Communications website! Just visit the Hummdis Communications Speed Test page to test your internet connection.
On the other hand, the best offering that Qwest has for me with DSL right now is 1.5 Mbps. They cannot provide me with anything faster.
